TRANSPORTATION AT WESTMOUNT

Westmount Charter School’s transportation system was established to offer parents an alternative way to transport their children to and from school. The school is dedicated to providing a cost-effective, efficient, and safe bus service. Parents may choose to use this optional service for their children.

Subject to government funding remaining unchanged, Westmount will continue to offer eligible families two transportation options:

  1. Register for Busing: Parents can register for busing, with government funding applied toward the busing cost.
  2. Register for “Parent-Provided” Transportation: Parents who provide transportation may register for this option, allowing Westmount to apply for government funding on their behalf. The portion of funding allocated to the parent will be reimbursed at the end of the school year.

Parents of currently enrolled students, must confirm their registration for either option during the re-registration process in late January/early February.

Parents of newly admitted students will confirm their registration upon acceptance and no later than September 30.

BUSING

In broad terms:

Service: Busing is a voluntary, fee-based service available for students who live within the boundary set by Alberta Education. Stops are located within Calgary city limits and congregated stops are utilized for efficiency and cost effectiveness. It is very important that the students are riding the bus for a reasonable amount of time on a daily basis. For this reason, we are unable to guarantee a bus stop within a certain distance of a student’s home.

Funding and Operation: The busing service operates as a separate program, funded through a combination of Alberta Education grants and user fees, with the goal of breaking even. The school currently operates 12 school buses through a local bus operator. For the current fee structure, please refer to Bus Registration, Fees and Payment Schedules.

Route and Stop Planning: Route and stop decisions are made collaboratively between the school and the bus carrier, prioritizing safety, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness. Westmount does not serve areas surrounding the schools nor many of the newer outlying communities. There are also several neighborhoods we do not serve such as the downtown core, Inglewood, and south of the Bow River to 17 Ave. Should you have questions regarding your neighbourhood, please direct them to Transportation Services at: schoolbus@westmountcharter.com

Student Conduct on Buses: The bus, along with any other vehicle used for student transportation, is considered an extension of the school. As such, all school policies and procedures regarding student conduct and discipline apply.

Login to mybusstop.ca to find out the status of your bus.   This is a GPS tracking system that allows parents/students to log in and see in real-time, where the bus is. You will need the school access code to access this system.

You can also contact Southland Transportation directly for information regarding your bus delay at 403 205 6688.

Students and parents are reminded that extra caution should be taken during the winter months. Please take a moment and review this important information with your children.

  • Children should be dressed appropriately for the colder weather. Unexpected mechanical problems with the bus occur more frequently at this time of year. Children must be prepared for this as buses cool off very quickly.
  • Unusually cold or stormy weather can result in bus schedules being delayed. We encourage parents to use extra caution with children on those days.
  • Children should be accompanied to the bus stop or have very clear instructions on what to do if the bus does not arrive. Never leave children at a stop without backup arrangements for an emergency.
  • A build-up of ice and snow can create a safety hazard for children waiting at the bus stop. Ensure that your child understands the importance of standing back from the curb as the bus approaches the bus stop.
  • Children will find it easier to walk snow and ice-covered roads when their school books and lunches are carried in a back pack. It is also much safer for them to board the bus with their hands free to use the bus handrail.
  • Assume that school is open unless you learn otherwise through the school or local media.

What can an IPP do for your child? An effective IPP is one that increases the understanding of a students’ learning needs and strengths, provides a snapshot of effective strategies and/or accommodations and enhances communication between teachers, parents and students.
