On August 26, 2020, the federal government announced that it would provide funding to the provinces for COVID-related school re-entry measures. Alberta’s total share will be approximately $262 million, made in two equal instalments. School authorities will be eligible to access this additional funding for COVID-19-related expenses.

As you may have heard the announcement today from Minister of Education, Adriana LaGrange, school authorities in Alberta will receive equitable allocations from the federal government funding. This funding will allow school authorities to address staffing, adapting learning spaces and personal protective equipment, cleaning and safety considerations for schools and buses, supports for special needs students, and online learning and teacher training.

I am pleased to announce that Westmount Charter School will receive $476,000. One of our first expenditures from this fund is to hire two additional teachers to support the at-home learners (SEAL) from grades 1-4. Other allocations will be determined over the next few weeks to address areas of need with respect to implementing health measures as defined in our school re-entry plan.

Administration from the elementary campus will communicate how the additional teachers will be engaged to support the SEAL program.

We are grateful for and encouraged by this additional source of funding.
