Grade 5 Beginner Concert Band
is for all Grade 5 students attending Westmount. It enhances General Music in the curriculum. Students participate in a Head Start Clinic in early September where they learn to assemble their instrument and play their first 5 notes. The Beginner Band performs at all Music Department concerts, as well as 2-3 elementary assemblies each year.
Grade 6 Junior Concert Band
is the first year of band as a course option. This band works at a Grade I Level of instruction. In addition to Music Department concerts, members attend Band Day Camp at Camp Horizon and perform at festival in the spring. Students who are new to Band at this level work for the first half of the year in a separate class before joining the main ensemble.
Grade 7 Junior Concert Band
performs at the Grade II Level of concert band literature. This ensemble performs at all concerts, attends an overnight Band Camp in the Fall with the Junior 6’s, and plays at Alberta International Band Festival in February. Members at this level are eligible to play in Junior Jazz Band. Students who are new to band at this level work for the first half of the year in a separate class before joining the main ensemble.
Intermediate Concert Band
combines Grade 8 and 9 students and performs at concert band Level III. In addition to all Music Department concerts, this Band attends Band Camp in late fall, the AIBF Music Festival in February, the ABA Music Festival in Red Deer (May), as well as going on tour every 2nd year. Students at this level are eligible to play in Junior or Senior Jazz Band.
Senior Concert Band
is high school ensemble studying music at the Grade IV-V level. In addition to performing at all Music Department concerts, this ensemble attends Camp in November, AIBF in February, ABA in Red Deer, as well as going on tour every 2 years with the Intermediate Band. Students in this ensemble are eligible to play in the Junior or Senior Jazz Band.
Beginner String Orchestra (Level I)
is a Grade 6 class designed to teach students who have never played a string instrument before. They may choose from violin, viola, cello or string bass. Students in this ensemble perform in all Music Department concerts, as well as events and assemblies at the school.
Intermediate String Orchestra (Level II)
is for students in Grade 7-8 with prior experience. They perform at all Music Department concerts, Kiwanis Festival, and also appear at various events and assemblies at the school.
Junior & Senior Jazz Bands
are extra-curricular performing ensembles. Junior Jazz meets every Tuesday after school for 1 hour, and Senior Jazz meets on Wednesdays after school, also for 1 hour. The Jazz ensembles can be heard at concerts throughout the year, and will attend AIBF in February.
Elementary Choir and Westmount Chorus
The Elementary Choir meets one lunch hour during the week, accompanied by Mrs. Bev Lynch. Students in Grade 4-5 are eligible to participate in the Fall session. Grades 3-5 may sing with us in the Spring session. The Westmount Chorus is open to all Westmount staff members and students in Grades 6-12. They meet after school for 1 hour, one night a week. Both choirs can be seen performing in assemblies as well as in various locations in the community.
