Hello Music parents!

Less than one week to go until our next concert! (Does your child know where their uniform is yet?)

• Tuesday, February 7th @ Hope Lutheran Church ( http://www.hopelutheran.ca/ ), 7:00pm - 8:30pm featuring Intermediate String Orchestra, Junior 7 Band, Intermediate Concert Band, Senior Concert Band, Junior Jazz Band, Senior Jazz Band.
• Wednesday, February 8th @ Westmount Gymnasium, 7:00pm - 8:00pm featuring Beginner String Orchestra, Day 1 Grade 5 Band, Day 2 Grade 5 Band, Junior 6 Band.
• The February 7th Concert will be a new frontier for Westmount Music as it represents our first off-campus concert! Admission will be $2 for adults, free for children (donations graciously accepted at both concerts).
• There will NOT be a concession at the Church concert. We will need 2 more volunteers to collect admission and hand-out programs. For the Feb 8th Concert in the Gym, we will need 2 more volunteers to hand-out programs and sell in the concession. Volunteers will only be required at the start and end of the concert. Volunteers will not miss any part of the performances. If you can help out, please contact Donna Stirling.

The next fundraiser will be selling Spolumbo’s Sausage and will commence immediately. Forms will be available on line, with copies available in the band room, and at the band concerts. All forms will need to be handed in by Feb. 22 to the band room. Please contact Elke Sterner with any questions. Thanks for your participation!

Students who report consistent high levels of involvement in instrumental music over the middle and high school years show significantly higher levels of mathematical proficiency by grade 12. This observation holds both generally and for low socioeconomic status students as a subgroup. In addition, absolute differences in measured mathematics proficiency between students consistently involved versus not involved in instrumental music grew significantly over time. – James Catterall, Richard Chapleau, and John Iwanaga, "Involvement in the Arts and Human Development."

A new month means that January practice journals are now due; of particular note, all Grade 6 and 7 (in addition to Grade 5) band students should be returning a practice journal.

The Alberta International Band Festival has posted the schedule of performances. We will soon call for chaperones, and parents are welcome to attend in the audience. Student attendance is mandatory. PERMISSION FORMS HAVE BEEN HANDED OUT. The Festival has stated that dates and times are subject to change:

• Junior Jazz Band: Wednesday, Feb. 22 @ 11:00am (Leacock Theatre, MRU) 1 chaperone required
• Senior Jazz Band: Wednesday, Feb. 22 @ 4:30pm (Leacock Theatre, MRU) 1 chaperone required
• Junior 7 Band: Thursday, Feb. 23 @ 11:30am (Rozsa Ctr, U of C) 3 chaperones required
• Intermediate Band: Friday, Feb. 24 @ 2:00pm (Rozsa Ctr, U of C) 4 more chaperones required
• Senior Band: Monday, Feb. 27 @ 11:15am (Rozsa Ctr, U of C) 2 more chaperones required
• Junior 6 Band: Thursday, MARCH 15 @ 11:00am (Bishop Caroll HS) 3 chaperones required

Co-op, Sobey's and Safeway are all available on an ongoing basis. Please fill out an order form on the website and submit it with payment to the Band-Aide. Please remember the band-aide is working reduced hours, so an e-mail could help speed up the turn around time. Orders will usually be filled on Tuesday morning.

Q: A first violinist, a second violinist, a virtuoso violist, and a bass player are at the four corners of a football field. At the signal, someone drops a 100 dollar bill in the middle of the field and they run to grab it. Who gets it? A: The second violinist, because:

• No first violinist is going anywhere for only 100 dollars.
• There's no such thing as a virtuoso violist.
• The bass player hasn't figured out what it's all about.
