Our middle school/mid grades program places a strong emphasis on enriching and deepening student learning that demonstrates proven performance.
We continue to stress the importance of community and citizenship, while celebrating student achievement and success. Realizing that both grade 5 and grade 6 students are just coming out of an elementary-school environment, special attention is given to making a gradual transition into mid-grades for these younger students.
Westmount has established an ambitious one-to-one laptop initiative at mid/high school. For 2010-2011 this program included grades 6,10 and 11, in 2011-2012 grades 7 and 12 have also joined the program, and in 2012-2013 the program will include all mid-high grades. Final details of the 2012-2013 program are still being set, click here for further information.
Fundamental to our program is the expectation that students direct their learning by organizing Alberta Education curriculum learner outcomes into relevant learning experiences and products that demonstrate their knowledge and understanding.

A Student Awards program was started in 2007-2008 by Student Council - application forms are available in the spring, on the Student Council bulletin board.
As part of Westmount's understanding of the world around us, a number of travel/learning opportunities are available to our students on a fee-for-service basis. In general, the trips are aimed at a particular grade, but in certain circumstances students in another grade (typically one grade higher than the rest of the group) may be included. These trips include the Westcoast Trip in Spring Break for grade 8 students. In May 2012 there is also a special Fine Arts trip to New York City. For information about grade 9-12 trips, click here.
