A Centre for Excellence in Gifted Education

Calgary, Alberta, Canada

Publicly Funded • established 1996 • K-grade 12

New Locations - September 2011

In September 2011, Westmount Charter School left its long-term location on Richmond Road and moved to the Parkdale and Sir William Van Horne school buildings. Although we have moved to different locations, we remain WESTMOUNT CHARTER SCHOOL, providing programming for gifted students as outlined in our Charter. Westmount Charter School continues to be governed by its own Charter Board; while we will continue to lease facilities from the CBE (Calgary Board of Education), we are independent of the CBE.

Kindergarten to grade 4:
Westmount Elementary
728 32 St NW
Calgary AB
T2N 2V9
(former Parkdale elementary school building)

Parkdale elementary school, named for its surrounding community, was built in 1952 and expanded in 1960. It was used as an elementary school until 2003. Since then, much of the building has been utilized as education-related office space.

A bit about the community:

Parkdale is located along the north bank of the Bow River between the communities of West Hillhurst and Point McKay. Though the City of Calgary annexed the area in 1910, it was not developed until 1948. Most of the community consists of low density residential dwellings. In addition, Foothills Hospital is situated on the hill just north of the neighbourhood. Parkdale has good access to Downtown, via Parkdale Boulevard/Memorial Drive.

Grades 5 to 12:
Westmount Mid-High
2215 Uxbridge Drive NW
Calgary AB
T2N 4Y3
(former Sir Wm. Van Horne school building)

Sir William Van Horne school was built in 1967 and continues to be in use in 2011. Most recently, it has been a technical high school offering Knowledge and Employability courses. It is named for 19th-century CPR Executive Sir William Cornelius Van Horne.

A bit about the community:

University Heights is located adjacent to the south end of the university of Calgary campus. Its development in the early 1960s coincided with the development of the University campus. Residents of University Heights enjoy close proximity to McMahon Stadium, Father David Bauer and Norma Bush Arenas, Foothills Stadium and Athletic Park, Foothills and Alberta Children's Hospitals, and the University of Calgary.
