Welcome to Westmount Charter School!

Westmount Charter School is a publicly funded K-12 school for gifted students in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, operating on two campuses. Our sixteenth instructional year began on September 6, 2011. Our school opened in 1996 with 116 students in grades 1-3; and we have now grown to a K-12 student population of well over 1,100!

Our Mission is to meet the learning needs of gifted students and promote their social-emotional development in a congregated setting.

Our Purpose is to provide qualitatively differentiated educational programming for students who are gifted. (The Charter, revised 2010)

Our Definition of Giftedness:
"Students are gifted when they perform, or show potential for performing, remarkably high levels of accomplishment in learning rate, depth of knowledge, and reasoning and problem-solving abilities when compared to others of their age, experience, and environment."

Our Program provides:
- an established program, in its 16th year of educating gifted learners
- a multi-faceted understanding of giftedness
- small class sizes and a caring learning environment that honours differences
- differentiated programming where teachers and students make modifications to process, product and /or pace within the Alberta Education curriculum to best reflect the student’s learning needs
- an emphasis on developing the whole child
- an emphasis on teaching students how to learn
- an emphasis on understanding concepts, and on developing a variety of creative ways for students to "show what they know"
- a qualified and dedicated staff
- school bussing and good access via Calgary Transit
- opportunities for volunteerism and humanitarian involvement in the world
- the opportunity to be in gifted programming from kindergarten to high school graduation.

Current and Coming Events

2012-2013 new student applications are now being received! Extremely well-attended parent information nights were held on January 18 (Elementary) and January 25 (Mid-High).

Re-registration, for students already attending grades 1-11 at Westmount, will begin early in February - watch for email notification.

Jan 31: 2nd Term for Mid-High Students begins. 1st term report cards for these grades will be issued on Feb 2.

February 2 - fundraising Bottle Drive before and after school at both campuses.

February 10 - Sr. High LaunchPad session. Come to the 2nd floor Sun Room at lunchtime to hear about Entrepreneurship! Postponed from Feb 3.

Mark your calendars: the annual Spring Fling fundraising silent auction is on March 2!

When your child is going to be late or absent:
• For elementary grades call 403.217.0426 and pick option 1.
• For mid-high call 403.217.9427 and pick option 1.
Please spell your child's last name and identify the reason for absence. If your child is ill, please inform us of the main symptoms of the illness.

At all times, remember to dress your children for the elements - PLEASE ensure that your child is wearing appropriate outdoor clothing, including headgear, as dictated by anticipated weather conditions. We do monitor the weather conditions for extreme cold and storms, but on most days, Physical Education students of all ages, as well as elementary-grade children with recess and lunch times, can expect to be outside.
