A general list to help students address obstacles which may be getting in the way of their learning:
ORGANIZATIONAL SKILLS
Come prepared for class
Use my planner in a proactive manner
Take responsibility for my belongings
Write all assignments and important dates in my planner
Ensure that report cards, field trip notices, etc. are seen by my parents
Transfer all important dates from the school calendar to a calendar at home
TIME MANAGEMENT
Break down my assignments into chunks
Set appropriate deadlines for myself
Utilize an effective strategy to pace myself
Complete important tasks first
Use class time effectively
Make appropriate seating and/or group choices in class
LEADERSHIP SKILLS/INTRAPERSONAL
Show a positive attitude toward learning
Ask for help when I need it
Understand my learning style preference and know how to advocate for myself
Respect school property and personal property
Respect the rights and ideas of others
Follow classroom and school routines
Attempt to solve problems in appropriate ways
Experience comfort in unfamiliar situations
Assume a leadership role with my peers
SOCIAL SKILLS/INTERPERSONAL
Learn how to make and keep friends
Recognize and utilize social cues (such as recognizing personal space, eye contact, voice level, etc.) appropriately
Offer opinions/information freely in class discussions
Respect another person’s opinion
Get along well with others
Participate in extra-curricular activities at school
Participate in extra-curricular activities outside of school
Feel comfortable in social situations
Communicate effectively with classmates
Work well in a group
STUDY SKILLS
Review material on a weekly basis
Use cure cards to write study notes
Study with a friend or group
Use mnemonic devices, word pairs, flashcards to help me study
Make games like “Jeopardy” to help me study
Make appropriate seating choices when studying
Use a quiet place at home to study.
