Physical Education
A strong emphasis is placed on developing positive attitudes by observing conventions of fair play, honest competition and good sporting behaviour as individual participants, team members and spectators. The students are encouraged to challenge themselves, to cope with success and limitations in their performance and to be mindful of others and the environment. One of the advantages of having mid and high school students in our school is that we can provide opportunities for older students to develop leadership skills while being role models for our younger athletes. Sports Day is a good example of this in action. We believe that the overall well-being of a student, their degree of happiness, and their level of achievement links closely with active participation in school clubs and activities. The Terry Fox Run and "Turkey Trot" happen each autumn, skating lessons for elementary grades are held in Jan-March, the annual walk-a-thon and elementary specTAGular are both held in May, and these are followed by swimming lessons in May-June.
An important initiative of Alberta Education is Daily Physical Activity (DPA). We gladly welcome this initiative, and ensure that all students from K-9 are engaged in half an hour of daily physical activity. We encourage an active lifestyle for our grade 10-12s as well, through Phys Ed 10-20-30 classes, school teams and coaching, and school activities organized by our Health and Wellness committee.
